Imagine being a child who’s sitting in a classroom of 15 or more of people who look nothing like you; while being informed for the first time in your life by a school teacher who teaches you, that your ancestors came to America as slaves, stacked hundreds on top of each other, carrying diseases that were responsible for killing the unvaccinated people around them.
Subsequently, once they reached the shores of America, they were held in bondage for a lifetime, and inevitably, every generation after them faced the very same fate.
Now imagine that same story being explained to 7 and 8-year-old kids, and the 15 or more people who do not look like you, are made to understand that the slaves were purchased, and then sailed to America, for the purposes of serving their great-grandparents.
Uncomfortable doesn’t begin to describe the degrading feeling of learning this disheartening information in a room full of your peers who already feel as though their skin tone affords them privilege.
Unfortunately, that moment has stuck with me for decades. One that I’ve never forgotten. Understanding that day, how low that moment made me feel; it was equally, if not more, gratifying the day that I discovered that the manipulated storyline of African Slaves arriving in America, did not represent my ancestors, nor did it tell the true story of the people of the area.

Most people in the South are unaware that the majority of their enslaved ancestors did not run North and across the Mason-Dixon Line to escape slavery. Shockingly, many of them migrated south, towards Florida. This explains why the Upstate counties of Greenville, Anderson, Pickens, and Oconee in South Carolina, still boast the lowest Black population of people in the state. However, we must not forget that thousands of Black people were killed in the South during the American Revolution, and many of the dead from the summer of 1776, came from the state of South Carolina.
As a result of war, slavery, and the threat of enslavement; much of the Black population of Upper South Carolina left the state and moved south into Georgia. The bravest of them all escaped slavery by running to Florida, where the same Oconee Indians of Upper South Carolina and North-Central Georgia, created the core of the storied Seminole tribe.
It is important to remember that the Seminoles were a combination of several all-Black Indian tribes. Therefore, there was very little difference in skin color between Seminole Chiefs, and “their black slaves” as the falsely depicted narrative taught by American history teaches. In this feature, I have already proven that the core nucleus of the Seminole tribe was created by Black people from the Oconee tribe, who were then described as Dusky, or dark skinned people.
In 1725, the creation of the Cherokee tribe helped to erase the history, culture, and religion; along with the knowledge of the official names of many of the Black tribes of the South.
